Default newbie, need some advice please

hi there, great forum and nice collection of cars! ok, im totally new to the vette scene, i picked up a 1990 black c4. amazing in one word! BUT....a couple of issues,

1: my rev counter is about 2k to high, not the engine, just the needle, its sits below 0 when off and when fired up and accelerating its just 2k higher than what it should be......

2. my check guages light comes on with ignition and goes out after few seconds, weird thing is that it very faintly flickers on when driving and on idle, bad earth possibly??

3 the car was sat for a while and when i drove it away the brakes were very faint with hard pressing and a wirring noise would come from the rear then service abs light, gradually that has stopped but what could that of been. still does it occasionally?

any help please, i have checked searchs but couldnt find much. thanks

I would check and replace all fluids and pressure bleed your brakes. Have a pro check your brakes. You may have a bad ground. Tach may simply be bad. 1990 was the first year for analog gauges and they don't have a good rep.

ok do you think the bad ground would afect the rev counter and check guages light? i assume the binaccle has the one earth.

and brakes are normally reliable then?

I think the tach is a separate issue. I don't know what a binaccle is.

A bad ground (earth) can cause MULTIPLE problems.

Hard brake pedal could be a vacuum leak to the power brake diaphragm, or a bad diaphragm itself. Is the brake pedal action the same way before you turn on the motor? If so, you have a vacuum leak, or bad booster.

no the brakes seem fine when off or running 99% of the time, just occasionaly you feel the abs throught the pedal and that noise from the back. it did it loads when i bought it and drove it away from where it had been sat, but as the miles went on it got better and now hardly does it. could it just be where its been sat maybe?

Change out your brake fluid, infact it would be a good idea to change all of the fluids, The second thing to do is to look on Ebay for a Factory Service Manual, it is the book GM gave to the dealers service departments to tell them how to fix our cars, it is the best investment you can make in your new car. It will answer just about all of your questions.

Get the FSM - get the red two book edition (with electricals) though, not the preliminary white cover book. I'm not for certain, but the whirring noise you hear may be the ABS testing itself. I believe it is typical to hear it at the beginning of each drive.

Good luck with your new vette,

Jonathan
