Default another strange thing lol......

ok, my steering wheel has alot of play in it from the pivot where it tilts up and down. is this normal for these cars or it likely to be a loose bolt. im not familiar with the setup on these. thanks

Mine has some play too. It doesn't really affect anything while I'm driving, so I'm not too concerned about it.

i thought that but my MOT guy said that would normally be a failure. (mot is a yearly certificate/inspection we have to have here to ensure car is road worthy)

If you are saying that the wheel can be moved up and down (play) at the tilt pivot then YES the bolts are loose. This is a common problem with GM tilt wheels. there is 4 bolts down in the column that loosen up and need to be removed and lock tite installed and reinstalled.

If it is not bad now I would not be real concerned about it. If it gets worse (really loose wheel) you will need to fix it.

Here's a pretty good link about steering column looseness and how to tighten those pesky bolts....

Some people use the wheel as leverage when getting out of the car, bad idea, this will screw your wheel up in short order. WW

Next time you need leverage to get out, hook your foot under the door and use that to pull yourself out . This works great for me and it saves the embarrassment of me having to roll out onto the ground. WW
