Advice on 84 Hypertech, to keep or not to keep...
I previously had a different thread going, but have decided to start a new one in case its gotten lost in the many pages of the forum.
I recently ran my 84 @ Carlsbad Raceway near Oceanside CA. I have run there before and was looking forward to some gains in E.T. and Run times. My previous visit to the Track was as follows:
6/3/2001
reaction Time=.719
60ft=2.207
330ft=6.105
1/8e/t=9.414
speed=74.16
Quarter Mile=14.68
Speed=93.74
As far as I remember the track conditions were decent that day. I had pretty good traction and my engine was cool since I was the first run of the day, and the first one in line. My car was able to cool for about an hour. At the time I was running Borg Warner 8mm Plug Wires, Rapidfire Plugs (ones prior to the new design), Mobil 5/30 Semi-Synthetic, an Octane Booster called 0-60 boost and as far as I know thats it. My tire pressure was around 35 psi. in the rear and I had just recently hollowed my cat.
My next run is as follows with the loss in time compared from my 6/3/01 run.
12/15/01
reaction time=.653 sec
60ft=2.531 +.324 sec
330=6.531 +.426 sec
1/8et=9.934 +.52 sec
Speed=72.04 +2.12 mph
Quarter Mile=15.42 +.74 sec
Speed=89.74 +4 mph
Track conditions that day were pretty bad. It had rained the previous day which turned our entry road into mud, which turn our track into a dirt road. Traction was very difficult to come by for most rear wheel drive cars that were there, even those with slicks. I had a very difficult time with traction which was a first because with my 14.6 times I hooked up right away. I'm sure you can tell from my 60 ft. times. It was so bad I had virtually none off the line, and I had to throttle it until I felt it hook.
The condition of my car is as follows. I had recently changed my plugs to the stock AC Delco plug for my car, I still had the Borg Warner Wires, but one had gotten cooked pretty bad from lying on the exhaust manifold and I bandaged it with Electric Tape. I had a spiratic miss, but my car still felt strong. Also, I had changed to the Valvoline VR1 20/50 Racing Oil since my car was running a little warmer. I should also mention that a previous time to the track, before I hollowed my cat, I was running the Valvoline oil and I ran a 14.8. I found that my engine ran cooler and felt smoother. My car also has 226,000 on it. It still feels very strong. Now aside from that the only difference was the Hyptertech Thermomaster, a control switch for my Radiator Fan which I set for 180 and a 160 degree thermostat, that is all. My car was running @ around 178 when I staged, the air was between 50 and 60 degrees and the humidity was about %80. What I'd like to know from you guys is if you think my gradual and steady loss of speed is due to the hypertech. I'm not exactly sure whatelse to say. I hope I have given enough infomation.
I do plan however to get another set of of Rapidfires and MSD 8.5mm wires before I go to the track. Please let me know if there are other factors I may have forgotten.

Thanks again for all your input. If the majorit of people say it is due to my hypertech I will attempt to return it and put the money into adapters and tires for my new rims.
Happy Holidays!
