Default ignition advice

well im looking for an ignition upgrade for my 1990 6 speed vette
im leaning towards an msd but witch one wil work with my com/ecm?
any advice guys??

Is this for forced induction? If not, stock is fine.

no i just want an upgrade of the ignition system and an msd looks nice
,but maybe someone has better experiances with another brand/ignition!??

If you are at or near stock I would leave it alone.

I haven't had any of the horror stories happen to me with my MSD (it is running on an older set up mind you) so I don't have a problem with them. Many debate any gains and I can see that; where we run the set up is on a 650 hp hot rod engine... The MSD equipment gave us the flexibility that we needed to get it dialed in right.

If this is a for looks mod only, you could make a pretend box and not spend a lot of money for no gain in performance. Running a search on MSD here should turn up some pictures and threads on their boxes.

I ran a few MSD 6ALs, and a BTM. They all worked fine, one failed but MSD replaced it. The only complaint (other than 30 year old technology) is the 'ticking'.

The mallory hyfire stuff is nice. I ran that on my last supercharged application. On a N/A cammed car there is some benefits at high RPM as the dwell time is very limited vs what is required to charge the coil between firing. If you have a higher compression motor and need a wider gap to light the charge AND high RPM a CDI ignition will keep it from missing up high.

If nothing else, the rev limiter is worth the $200 or whatever those boxes go for these days. I've experimented with the factory rev limiter in the chip and have already exploded one catalytic converter heh.. (literally, ceramics flying out the tailpipe).

I am running the stock HEI distributor and an MSD 6AL. Set gap at .035 and you will be all set.

Highly recommend the Taylor 509 SP wires, they are pretty large and hold up for YEARS of abuse.

Also I run NGK plugs and have real good luck with them as well.

That combo should be good for anything you throw at it.
