I put a later model mini-starter on my 87. It cranks nicely when cold, but very slow when hot. My battery is showing good voltage when hot. I assume the starter is nearing the end of its life.
Anything else to check that may be the culprit?- wires, battery?
I've seen threads about rebuilding the contacts in the mini-starter. Does that fix the slow start issue?
I installed a 1988 corvette starter on it after I put long tube headers on the car.
Like yours, it spins faster when cold and much slower when hot (it even stops momentarily when hot, i.e.- slow spin...stop...slow spin). I have had situations where it dosen't spin at all, it turns a little then just stops. Even when cold it does not have the very fast spin it had with the original, HUGE, starter.
I plan on changing the battery cables in the next few days, and I will report back with my findings.
