I am really tired of doing the key in the door thing. Is the GM brand unit the best or should I go with aftermarket?
Is Carfan18 the best spot for this?
If keyless entry is all you want then get the GM VKE1000 keyless entry system. They are $100 at your local GM dealer. I have it installed and its top notch... plus it can be made to work with your factory alarm system so you don't have to do "the door thing". Go to http://www.batee.com/corvette/ . Bryan has a very thorough writeup of the installation. Just remember that your 85 (84-85 only) is a positive triggered door locking system...
Keep us posted if you go ahead with this. My lock cylinders are getting kind of stiff and since getting a new Bonneville last year with the keyless entry, I've been considering one for the Vette. I have noticed one of the chain stereo shops has been advertising one for $99 installed. I just don't know if I want some young apprentice screwing around with the Vettes wiring. If your install goes well I might rather do it myself with the GM unit.
I bought a viper and had it (professionally installed). Well it took about 4 trips back and forth before the alarm didn't go off when I opened the doors with the remote. It works fine now. If I had it to do over. I'd have gone with the GM even if it's a few more bucks.
Re: 1985 keyless entry GM or aftermarket? (billreid1@home.com)
id85,
I bought my keyless entry from Crutchfield for $79, and it is the bomb. Fully programmable, and it pos the hatch with a separate button on the remote. It comes with 2 remotes. The Technical Service is priceless. They worked with me for 2 hours one night while I sorted out how to get everything to function without tripping the alarm.
I am glad I went the route that I did. Happy Holidays.
