You're unlocking the door with the key (not reaching into the car to unlock it), right?

Sounds like the sensor wire is shorted in the door so it doesn't know your using your key. Try unlocking it from the passenger side and see if it still happens.

what exactly are you doing? You have to use the key to unlock the door and then start the car or the VATS will go nuts. You cant unlock the door any other way or itll freak out. He may be right, if youre doing this right then a sensor wire may be to blame.

would that also prevent the car from cranking up? Sometimes when the car isn't even locked I'll go to crank it up and nothing, I have to wait about 5-10 min. hot or cold.

Now that sounds like a VAT's problem. Or so I'm told, I"ve been lucky so far.

It sounds like you have the dreaded ign sw pellet contacts problem. Try using your spare ign key, its pellet contacts are a little higher and it may help. The contacts in the ign sw that make with the key pellet come down the steering column and go to a 2 pin plug under the carpet. Unplug and measure the pins coming from the ign sw with the key in place. The resistance should be the same as the pellet. If higher than 10,000 ohms, you have bad contacts and the ign sw needs to be replaced. You can put a fixed resistor the same value as your pellet across the 2 contacts going to the passenger side (VATS module) and drive the car until you can schedule a switch replacement. Don't do this permanently because your vette can easily be stolen by bashing the column and jumping the ign. VATS saves a lot of vettes.
