Looking for some help with Steer Column.
It feels loose and wiggles slightly when I hit a bump in the road.
If I accelerate on to the freeway or pass someone it’s ok but when I get off the gas the sucker wobbles (the car doesnt just the wheel).
I have read that there are some column screws that can come loose has anyone checked or replaced them on their car?
It’s a 1986 model.
Also how hard of a job is it? Tools?
Looked for a previous tread but couldn’t find,
Thanks

Start here. This is a VERY common problem. If the pins dont fix the wobble, you may have to replace the housing/support also. Its a little more involved, but on a bench its doable in a few hours. TAKE your time. If you dont want to rebuild past the pins, because it is more intensive, but do able, call this guy or email him in South Carolina. He does this for a living and has all the parts you will ever need and is great. Here is an 87 ElCamino and a Fiero for same era, so the air bag isnt a part of the job http://elcaminocentral.com/article95.html http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/steering.html

I have the same problem as well. Those articles seem to place most of the blame on the four screws at the very end. They don't seem to say much about the pivot pins. I assume the pivot pins are a 'do it while you're down there anyway' kind of thing?
I am going through the same thing with mine, but it having a air bag I don't want to mess with it myself. I think I will contact Tom and see how close he lives to me here in SC.
Sounds like a common problem.
I found a guy that does these here in Minnesota, he said it is most likely the screws in the column, he will do for 90 bucks but if its the hub behind it its $100 for part and $100 for work still better than the dealer that said it would be $500 at least no way man lol
Im thinking of doing it myself if i get this used one to practice on.

The four screws can come loose, but what happens is the pivot pins are harder steel than the pot metal housings, both the support and housing that the pins go through. This elongates them over time as COrvette owners generally use the steering wheel to get in and out of the Vette. Replacing these two parts is 200 bucks,a few months ago, from Tom. They are good parts. The pins arent much. Most people will tell you to do the pins first, and see if that fixes it as it is cheaper. Try it. If it doesnt get rid of all the wobble, then do the support and housing.
Do, Support and housing together, DONT DO ONE OR THE OTHER!
