ok i have a stock lt1 automatic car that needs a gear i have just rebuilt the transmission with a 2800 rpm stall and the car has a 2.59 gear so this is not very fun to drive. What gear should i go with and where is a good place to get a used d36. Thanks

If you are gonna replace the whole diff. why not get a D44. If you just want gears, 3.07 on up to 3.45 will work fine. A d44 with 3.33 gears will work well.
At least about the ratio part, some will suggest 3.73's, I thought they were too steep for the street and settled on 3.45.
The D44 upgrade is nice but it costs at least three times as much as a D36 with better gears.
You can watch e-bay but most of the D36's I see there are standard ratio, try posting a WTB here in the C4 parts section.
You will love the difference, good luck.
I have 3.73's now and I wished I had of stayed with the 3.54's they were perfect. I did end up putting a D44 in though and it would have saved me the $1400 I paid for the gear swap in the D36.
i was looking at buying a 3.54 gear set and a rebvuild kit with the clutchs and just rebuild my stock diff should be about 600.00 in total
Good choice, your D36 should hold up fine with a stock or lightly modified LT1, JT's White 93 is still running one behind a strong 383. Make sure the gear set you buy will fit your 2.59 carrier or you will need to replace that as well.
Here is where I dislike the single C4 tech forum. I wish there were a separate LT1/L98 page because the l98 guys will tell you 3.08/3.07 which may be correct for a low rpm engine, but for a stock LT1 3.45/3.54s are a good choice.
Now for a built LT1 you may want to bring it up to 3.73s. I have a D44 in my car with 3.54s and at times I wish I had a little more gear (3.73s) but when I'm cruising along around 80 mph, I like the 3.45s just fine
My vette is my daily transportation IE to and from work so I'm not a weekend wax jockey and I have to worry about reliablity, fuel economy etc....but if it was my weekend toy I'd go for 4.11/4.56
