Default 94 LT1 halfshaft u-joint replacement-hints?

Hello all,

I'm going to attempt this job myself, as the stealership wants $500 per halfshaft (just for labor) to replace the u-joints

I am a decent mechanic and have the necessary tools.

How bad a job is it, any tips to help me out, etc.

And where can I get jackstands to fit my vette? I've been everywhere and they are all too tall, even after jacking the car with a floorjack.

Thanks!

This will help with the halfshafts http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...post1556612943

I got my jackstands at Advance. No problems at all. You can see them at the end of the little vid I have on the Corsa'a in my signature. They are 3 ton stands.

I thought that Scorp's page was a dead link but it's not. The U-Joint replacement link is on the bottom left of the page.

$500? Not worth it. I replaced mine with spicer sealed joints. You should be finished in time for lunch.

Thanks for the help everyone.

It only took me 2.5 hours to do the job with the car on jackstands with no experience, so my guess is that the dealer mechanic could do it in about 1.5 hours.

I did save time by having another halfshaft that I had ready to go, which saved me the 20 minutes it took to install the u-joints.

And they wanted $500 PER HALFSHAFT just for labor? Plus they gave me the that they had to "take everything out" to get at the halfshafts. again.

I was able to replace my half-shaft U-Joints without removing any suspension components.

It's been awhile and I can't remember exactly the sequence but, it's something like this:
  1. Install wheel side U-Joint and yoke first
  2. Removal of two Diff side half-shaft U-Joint caps (I can't remember if it's the half-shaft or diff yoke caps)
  3. Simultaneous rotation, alignment fitting of the Diff yoke and half shaft U-Joint
  4. Reinstall U-Joint yoke caps once U-Joint is in the proper position connection the Diff yoke and half-shaft
In otherwords, by connecting the wheel side U-joint first to the wheel yoke and then spinning the half-shaft / wheel with the transimssion in neutral you can rotate the half-shaft U-Joint without two of the U-Joint caps together with the diff yoke and slip the U-Joint into position.

I haven't done it in awhile but, it worked for me and saved alot of time by not having to remove any suspension components.

Be careful, I recentlly had my car jacked up on flat timber ramps about 12 inches in the air, had to rotate rear wheels so put a trolley jack under the rear axle (my exhaust was off) jacked the rear wheels off the ramps, then put gearbox into neutral and released hand brake...got under the car...when finished, partially lowered the jack (rear wheels onto ramps) while I was under the car, it suddenly rolled backwards and nearly crushed me, I froze...I was saved by the jack jamming against the corvette floor!! I have been working on cars for over 30 years and we can still make mistakes!!!

I did the passenger side yesterday in about an hour. $500 is crazy.

Hi all,

I need to replace the half-shaft u-joints on my 95 and saw this thread. Unfortunately most of the links are inoperative. Can anyone assist me with some advice/shortcuts as it seems like there are many ways to save time.

Thanks in advance!

Did you try this one? It's pretty straight forward. It's under "Technical Info"

Thanks a lot. It has the Scorp info that everyone was talking about but the links wouldn't access. I appreciate the reply and the info!
