Length of '91 A4 from part that goes into rear extension housing of the 700R4 and connects to output shaft is ~33.5" on mine. Without the front part that splines onto the rear of the tranny it is exactly 29".
Hope that helps,
Jonathan

D44 shaft measaures 26.75" +/- .0625 This is on a shaft that I believe is/was factory.
"rodj" is correct with the measuring point on the shaft "center to center" of u-joint.
Depending on the project if I had a A4 (D36) and was changing to M6 (D44) I'd use what I've got after having it shortened and balanced with new u-joints.
Why? You buy a used M6 (D44) you likely need to swap slip-yoke, needs u-joints, and "needs" to be balanced after the swap! Less expensive? Probably!
Hey "rodj" that's 1/16" or maybe 1.55mm I'd think your "eye" could catch that. I was actually just going to do a +/- and figured someone would "bust me"! I've had a couple done to the 26.75" and sold with D44's. I've never heard any of them "fuss"!
