Default Coolant temp. relationship to running

Car in question: 84 crossfire auto with auto and 85 fuel pump.

Has new (and tested good) fuel pump relay, fuel pump, ignition control module, fuel filter and fuel pump "sock.")

GOt all the "bugs" worked out...or so I thought..

Runs GREAT idles and operates exactly as could be expected. Once it gets hot however the situation changes.

After being warmed up and appx. 7-10 miles of in town driving the temp gauge becomes erratic. It will read around 230 then jumps to 250 and down so far as to read "low." It changes all around that range every few seconds.

Oil temp is around 225-230 which is maintained while this happens.

I used my "lazer" temp gun and get a reading of 225 at the upper radiator hose. Seems to not actually be running hotter than that.

How hot is too hot?

WHen this happens it cuts itself off. Is this a result of the high reading from the temp?

This will happen under normal driving conditions and feels as if the key has been turned off.

I am thinking coolant temp sensor is bad. What do you think?

I have done the searches and asked everyone I know.

Will a bad temp sensor cause the computer to cut off fuel or ignition?

What should I do form here??

Thanks in advance for your expertise and help!

Not sure on '84's but on later models temp indication (gauge ) is independent of temp switch used for ECM control.
You appear to have confirmed actual temp ( gun and oil temps) is correct so I would replace the gauge sensor first so you have a correct temp gauge.
