I have located a set of Nitto 555 tires in 285 40 17. For those of you who may have used Nitto 555s before, what did you think of them? These are 555s--not any of the competition variants.
they aren't that bad, also they make the weird sizes like 285 40 and 315 35. you might also check in the zr1 section since many of those guys are using the 315s since nothing much really exists outside of R tires. keep in mind they are a 300 treadwear so you aren't going to have a soft super grabby tire. however, the casing is good, they balance easy and aren't at all hard to control. did you also find the matched 255 45 17 for the front?

I am going to use 285 all around. They would be replacing a set of BF Goodrich KDWs, and I probably would not be using them at the track, but I definately am an agressive "street" driver so don't want squishy tires. Ideally, I would've loved KDWs in 285 40 17, but they aren't made any more, everything else in this size is backordered except Michelin (way too expensive), and while the F1 GS D3s are starting up production again, I have had some bad experiences with previous Goodyear tires, and don't know if I want to risk it again at such a high price (yeah, I have heard all the great things about the tires, but still.....).
do you need to drive in rain and or get many miles from the tire? the falken 615 will be faster and hook harder, however it will only last about half as long as the nitto. maybe 2/3rds as long. the 555 is a good all purpose tire that will give you some milage, will feel sporty and is available in a 285 since that seems to matter some people. the 615 is 275 only but it's softer and a little more aggressive. it's funny you mention the BFG KDW because the nitto 555 is exactly the same tread compound and a similar design. if i remember right the 555 has smaller grooves but looks almost identical to the 1st gen KDW. the only 285 that is better all around is the michelin PS2 and they cost quite a bit more.

Thanks! This is my only car, so I do need to be concerned about the rain---at least a little concerned. I really like BFG tires, generally, and my KDWs in particular, so your insights were very helpful!
