1.6 roller rocker question
I'd like to buy a set of self-aligning 1.6 rockers for my stock except headers 89 coupe. At a future date, I
will be using AFR heads, but that's a ways away. My question is this: Will the self-aligning models work
on aftermarket heads, or will I need a different set?
Other than valve cover gaskets, what will I need to do to run them, and what models will be the best for
my application (kind of stuck on which cam I'd like, but it won't be any bigger than the ZZ-9 cam from
TPiS).

You really need to replace your springs when you do the rocker arms. The LT4 springs will work even with the ZZ9 cam. You can get a set of springs and keepers from a GMPP outlet for cheap.
I won't hazard a guess as to what anonymous parts might work way in the future with other parts.
Going from 1.5 to 1.6 rockers will increase valve lift about .030" This will put your stock 89 springs right on the ragged edge on having the minimum clearance, so - I agree - it's best to change springs. Your stock ones are probably tired anyway.
In addidtion to that, CompCams recommends you move to NON self-aligning rocker arms. That's what I did. You'll need pushrod guide plates to run the NON self-aligning rocker arms.
Now would be the best time to move to 7/16" rocker studs and specify rockers that are designed for those studs. .080", hardened one-piece pushrods would be a nice move too. However, you may need to buy another set of a different length when you move to the AFR heads.

Yes, but you will need the hardened rods etc, Unless you are building a car to race it's not necessary. Wait until you do heads to spend all that. Remember Comp Cams is selling parts so they want to sell you a high dollar kit. It depends on what you want.
The 113 heads come with non-functional guide plates and self-aligning stamped rockers. So you will likely have to deal with these guide plates anyhow; why not go with non self-aligning RRs, hardened guides & PRs and maybe even a set of TPIS springs to support your future ZZ9 cam. I agree that going to 7/16" studs is a good idea, especially looking ahead to the new cam.
You should get new keepers and a variety shim pack from Comp Cams and some light assembly lube for where the new parts make contact.
