93 C4 Auto--68k was running fine, but noticed just a bit of hesitation at idle and during acceleration in hot weather.....then just up and died......would not start......got it started 30 minutes later.....drove it home.
Next morning...fine.....got 3 miles, stopped, got back in, got 1 block stalled...no restart.......couple of times got it going on a few cylinders.....but now nothing......no even cool won't start.
Tried loosening gas cap......had it towed back to my garage and there she sits.....any tricks ideas or such?
Only real mod to the car is straight pipes behind the cats.....otherwise pretty stock.
I pulled off the air intake--don't smell gas when cranking.....makes me think fuel is issue, not spark....have 3/4 tank of premium in it.....
ok. got it home....let it cool...still nothing, no cough, sputter, nothing.....pulled off the air intake and sprayed starter fluid in the throttle plate....started...idled beautifully for a while, so i shut off. 30 minutes later tried again.....no start without starter fluid.
I am guessing if I take it out, it will die again at low rpm....interestingly, i had just a few hiccups in teh last few minutes of driving when i was goosing it.......so still trying to figure.
was planning a 165 miles trip next week, and am nervous.....
check to see if you have any fuel pressure going into the fuel rails, could be a bad pump, easy to change if so. another way to check is take fuel line off the feed side of the pump located under the gas filler tube, turn ignition on and see if it pumps fuel, if not then there's the problem
i like the fuel pump idea, but before I do, I restarted tonight with starter fluid, now been idling for 40 minutes....wanted to heat up the engine bay while still 90 degrees here....shut hood....periodically revving up to 3 grand perfectly fine.......
coolant now up to 217......still fine.....plus no SES, so presumably no codes to check......if the pump was bad, would this happen....since if I were to disconnect now, apparently it would be pumping fuel?
Put a gauge on the schrader valve and report back what it reads at idle and throttled up. Sounds like a flakey fuel pump or blocked filter either way the proper way to find out is using the FP gauge.
I think you are right--I will have to spring for the fuel pressure guage---good place to buy? Also, where do you attach--I am still looking for the wingnut holding the air cleaner to the carb :-)
Sounds like the fuel pump is in the rear--an easy fix--is the procedure anywhere?---any good sources?, as to the fuel filter, where will find that puppy (I know, I know, in the fuel line, but where is it typcially.)
As you might tell, I stopped doing my own work when I had to please the boss everyday in 1972, and am now just easing back into doing my own repairs (the arthritis does not help). Things have sure changed.
so after she ran perfectly in the garage for 45 minutes, I shut her down for 25 minutes.......went out.....started ok....then I heard a miss.....brought her up to 1800 RPM, so she started to miss....every 10 sec, then 5 sec, then a bit more......let her down to idle, she started to cough and sputter, and could hear knocking.....then stall.....restart.....knocking....not up to idle speed....then stall. Hmmmm...does this add or focus on anything?
