Default Making a harness bar.

I've been experimenting with making a harness bar. This one:

Cost about $50. It is gas welded to federal aircraft spec. Here is the list of metal:

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/me/steel.html

03-55300 4130 SHEET 6" X 12" X .125" $8.28
03-10800-4 4130 STEEL TUBE 2X.065 4FT $26.40

It weighs four pounds. Each harness with all straps weighs six pounds.

Looks good could you possibly add hoops to it behind the seats, that would look cool also.

I thought about that as I have seen the design with the hoops. I thought that they wouldn't really help in a roll over as they are unsupported in the middle of the bar plus the halo is part of the frame and is steel. So there is a roll bar already. I was surprised the harness straps weigh so much!

How is it attached to the car? Are those angle end pieces bolted to the frame or welded?

I made this one easy to remove. The end brackets could be turned the other way and have it permently bolted down. This way is easier to access the bolts. I used the two studs that are there plus tapped and added another bolt. I made the flange extra long toward the front of the car. This will cause the front of the flange to try and push through the frame and the rear to try and pull up the bolts. I could add yet another bolt or stud in the back and have four total bolts on each side.

any close up pics of where you mounted it?

I've been thinking about getting something made up as shipping a pre-made one to the UK will be a killer

I could take some. On my year there is the targa storage bracket there. Just remove it and you will find two studs with 10 MM nuts. I used those plus added another.

Looks great! Could you see a way to re-install the targa roof brakets in a way that would allow you to put the roof back there, and have the harness bar in place ??

I would check but I tossed the brackets as extra weight. I made it easy to remove so you could remove the bar and put the top store brackets back on in just a min.

I'm going to clean it up and paint the bar tonight.

Welding it in would be nice! I have been thinking of accessing that area under the targa brackets, anyone know if you can see that under the fender liner? I could install a bottom plate to really make it strong.

Edit, it took around four hours to make this. I didn't keep track to well of the gas welding, that takes a long time. The press was set to 35 tons to bend the end bracket flange. Aluminum mandrels were made to form the radius.

Your bar looks good, but where your anchored to is nothing but glass under it. There's no steel under there. First hard pull and your going to break out.

No it's not glass. I just cut threads in the steel there. Frame drawings:

You hit a piece of steel strap that backs up the two studs for the targa support brackets. I spent a lot of years cutting c4's up as the founder/owner of R-D Racing Enterprises and developing safe products for these cars. The frame is another 2 to 3 inches below the strap you drilled into. When you cut a hole back there to install a roll bar you can see it.

I'm not knocking your product, I'm just offering cheap safe advice.

Dave, thank you for the tip on that. I ran a wire into the tapped hole I made by the targa mount studs. 1.5" down is more steel. I am wondering if I should bother with the two targa holder studs at all and just cut that out or run a large bolt through that piece of strap steel into the frame 1.5" down. I pulled out all the carpet there and that strap piece of steel is pretty wide, it's the whole horizontal part on the wheel well. On the verticle side in the hatch area it is fiber. Odd design there.

I've been looking at other harness bars. It looks like the Exotic Muscle bar uses those two targa mount studs. Here is a nice picture from Mojave of the bar:

If those two studs pulled out it looks like the bar would rotate forward by pivoting on the seat belt stud and be of no use in a crash. How was the R&D bar made?

Under the plate with the targa storage studs was more metal, I drilled and tapped into two more layers of steel there for bolts. I used 3" bolts there.

dang you know how to save cash!! good work that is gonna be awsome! I just paid 250 for a cross bar and maybe not as strong, plus I think you should weld hoops on top of that thing for the total package those look good but are like 700 and up I have seen!
