Is there an aftermarket Timing pointer that will work on the LT motors, or do I need to break out a coat hanger and wire clippers? I'm sure there are quite a few High Powered guys running aftermarket timing marked balancers and use timing lights......................right? Thanks in advance
I normally take one of the cheap, chrome tabs, bring the motor to exact tdc, install the tab, and use a pair of tin snips to trim it to a point.
If it is visible, I deburr it, and shoot it with silver paint.
99 cent way to get the job done.
nolan now that i think about it.. the lt1 or 4 does not use a timing pointer. So you will have to rig one up.. this might work but brackets might have to be fabricated..

Not only that, but I'm trying to remember if my damper even had a TDC notch.
over the last half-century, i've run a few SBC-1 engines with a hub so small that timing pointer up front would be useless...cut a small chunk from the tin cover on the front of the bellhousing, bring the engine to TDC and prickpunch/dab of white paint a TDC mark on the tin cover and on flywheel behind the new "window"...measure your flywheel and add "advance" marks that will be needed (do the math)...in most cases it helps to raise the front of the car enough to "shoot" the timing mark from under the car.
Thanks, I'll see if I can swing it...........I believe the problem is that the Opti spark sits in front of the timing cover and would prevent a normal SBC timing indicator. This weekend when the motor is completed, I'll see what I have to work with and go from there. Thanks to all!
