Ok, well sat i was finally happy to work on my car. Just got the VBP rear sport spring,2 bilstein shocks, 2 new wheel bearings, all new half shaft u joints, 1" rear vbp sway bar, and the rebuilt diff (36)......This was all i needed to finish up the rear suspension FINALLY after 5 years......So anyways, i filled the diff with oil and additive, laid the rtv on it , and slowly lowered the batwing onto it. Got the bolts in and torqued. I took a break to let the rtv set up. Came back 1 hour later, and got the brackets for the strut rods and bolts ready. I put the brackets on and when i tried to put the through bolts through the differential, they didnt fit. I was fuming. I had to drill out the differential so the bolts would fit.
I dont understand why i had to do this. My car is an 88. Is it possible i got a diff from, say an 84? Did the diameter of the bolts change before or after 88??
It all worked fine, im just looking for an answer why i had to do this.
Any idea why this is? Believe it or not, when i did the job sat, i didnt have drill bits. My lathe (and car for that matter) are at my buddies house. I didnt feel like buying drill bits as i own about a thousand of 'em/. I ended up using an end mill bit for my lathe checked up into my cordless drill! lol...Hey if i didnt, the project wouldnt be done!!
Kind of surprised you didn't have to change batwing to pumpkin bolts too, I think the problem is that the fasteners changed at some point in production from English to metric and the holes are just enough smaller not to fit. Fairly common when swapping these units for this to occur.
