But...for what it is worth, I have a much better understanding of my Ignition, ECM and a couple other gizmo's.

Thanks.

I took my GM manual out and sat down for about an hour, and the points you make seem valid.

I don't think I will be trying to make anything happen inside. my Dist., though!!!

The list of "Plug & Play" items to be bought is longer than the time I have to tinker.

It takes me hours and hours and hours to read a very minor part of disassembled code, and even then sometimes I 'understand it wrong'. These guys impress me. The fact that he has no problem just diving in and modding an ECM that to date has no public definition file (meaning it CANNOT be tuned by commonly available software) puts him on the top of my 'super smart guy' list.

I'd love to pick his brain about some things, but I imagine they would probably all be covered under some past intellectual property agreement he signed with previous employers. heh oh well.

Well, there might be a couple items that are best not discussed in detail due to respecting the intellectual property of a former employer, but most topics on the forum are general enough, or available in the public domain and don't pose a problem.

Could you answer this age old questions that has been speculation for years.

On the majority of GM ECMs, was the BIN's originally coded in C, or assembler?

I've heard rumors that they used some development environment in C which is why lots of code segments in various ECMs are the same, but other folks have said no it was written in assembler from day 1.

Well, to be honest, I'll admit I'm not qualified to answer that. There was certainly a bit of commonality in software "way back when" when most all the ECMs used Motorola 6800 based processors, but it's my understanding that the software guys made some major changes in the last decade when they were writing code, as the availability of processors from multiple vendors pushed towards a way to write somewhat "universal" algorithms that could then be converted/assembled into the distinct code needed for each processor brand. I was a hardware designer, so I never had time to get too deeply involved in how the software guys wrote the code. Sorry for the "no answer" answer.
