I purchased a set of edelbrock heads and after the 1st 1000 miles the car was burning 2 quarts of oil.. I suspect that it is valve guides, I will know as soon as I can get around to pulling the heads off. Has anyone else had this problem with edelbock.
valve guides are the typical reason for that, and or a seal or two coming off the guide. edelbrock is known to be one of the better out of the box heads that usually doesn't have this problem. i totally feel for ya. my pro actions had 3 bad guides when new also. typically edelbrock is better than that in QC.
Did you buy the heads new? If not, how many miles were on them?
Edelbrock has the industry's highest rating in quality control - I forgot what the actual name of it is - maybe someone can fill in the blank on that. There was even a TV show on their manufacturing and machining procedures and how extensive the rating company's inspection is of the parts that Edelbrock produces.
So my thinking is, while is not impossible, I'd first suspect another cause other that the guides.
If the engine wasn't burning excessive oil before the change in heads, I'd suspect valve stem seals.
Any sign that one of the intake ports could be sucking oil? If so, it should show up as oil fouled plugs, or smoke out the exhaust, etc.
I removed the miniram and put in new gaskets and glued them around the intakes. No difference. I purchased the heads new, out of the box. I put new teflon seals on. No difference, still burning oil. I guess I could try the umbrella type seals to see how that works. But my guess is bad guides in #2 and #4, where I am getting a build up on the plugs.
My car did that with the Miniram and the problem was the seal between the intake ports and the heads, it was sucking oil form the top of the oil drain back area under the intake.... I used a lot of Rite Stuff to seal it, but I gunked up the rings really bad.
I hope you did not use the China wall gaskets on the ends of the intake.
