Hi
I own a 1989 convert and i put a hypertech chip in a couple years
ago i like the fact that the temp is cooler the fans come on at 210
and shifts a bit better but i just put a true dual off road exhaust kit on
and holly cows this car stinks!!!!
The car is burning way rich.
My question is can a chip make your car burn way rich like that
man my tail pipes are so black!!
How will the O2 sensor think it is leaner or richer depending on where it is? AFAIK, either it is at temp and works or it is below temp and doesn't work.
Cats have NO effect that I can see on how rich or lean your car runs. I just have a Random Tech cat to keep some of the drone down. No precats and long tube headers with Borla stingers.

I will put the stock chip in this weekend.
This system is without cats, so if cats keep the smell down
That much I guess I will have to save up some green and go
back to stock.
If I go back to stock do I need the precats or is the one in the middle good enough?
Thanks!!
If you get it running with correct A/F ratio, it shouldn't smell too bad. But a CAT is a good choice -- if you don't have one and need sound reduction.
I agree cats have no bearing on A/F ratio. Since you didn't move the O2 sensor, you're probably just smelling the exhaust w/o the CATs.
You only need front cats if your center CAT is NOT a 3-way CAT and you want to comply to emissions. CA may be more strict and require you keep original config. That I don't know.
BTW: How did you determine it's running rich?
If it's like my car, I had two suspect injectors on the driver's bank. Because they were lean, the ECM told all injectors to squirt more gas. So, the 6 good injectors were overdriven. Remove the CATs in this situation and you have your answer.
W/O any codes, try checking injector resistance. You won't have to look hard if you don't know how. Threads are all over on the subject. One (with video) should be within a day/two of the top in C4 tech.

Correct, factory manifolds, its the offroad dual from kit from cc
I know it was going to smell a bit, but not this bad and the drown is bad too.
The car runs great i just thought i would save a buck with the catless
set up all I know is the wife hates it!!!!!

Why don't you just go with a set of TPIS Long Tube headers and eliminate the pre-cats.
