Default Magnaflows with x pipe

I have an L98 and plan on switching out the exhaust soon and what im looking at is to remove the cats and go with an x-pipe out to some magnaflows. The magnaflow set i've found for the L98 comes with the y-pipe and my question is would I or an exhaust shop be able to cut out the y (just past the first hanger) that connects to the cat and weld em on to the x-pipe? Or could I just get the muffler assembly, even though it says for 92-96, and just get custom pipes to connect the x-pipe and mufflers? Its an 85 L98 and I want to go duals from the manifold back. Here's a link to the parts im looking at. Thanks.

My suggestion is to buy a 2.5" "off-road true dual system". It comes with all the piping necessary to plumb the car from the manifolds back. The muffler shop can insert the X-pipe. You won't be able to reuse any of the CATs -- but they are designed for the smaller 2.25" factory tubing.

Try it w/o cats and see if you like the sound. The Magnaflows (w/o any CATS) may or may not provide enough muffling to make you happy. Or you could pick any 3-chamber muffler to add to the system. This would provide similar sound while freeing the extra $$$ to pay for the dual piping.

A muffler shop would probably charge close to the same price (to use their own pipe) as what you'd pay for the pre-bent dual setup. So, I doubt you'd see any savings from letting a shop do the whole enchilada (e.g., use their own pipe).

If you need CATs to stay legal, put front ones in the dual system. Leave off the mufflers and listen to the sound/volume before deciding if you want mufflers. CATs muffle about the same amount as a sport muffler. Actually, this is what I'd suggest anyway. Your car would be cleaner and your wallet lighter. Magnaflow has reasonably priced replacement "spun" CATS (i.e., $70ish for 2.5" front replacements. You don't have to get the high-dollar bullet cats at double the price -- unless you want every scrap of HP you can get).

Do you have FL or OEM headers?
Does the MF front Y connect to OEM headers (I assume so)?

I have a local exhaust shop (not a commercial chain store) that can weld up ANYTHING...lol The guys at Mufflex are truely artists at welding up custom exhaust systems.

If you want the MF SS look to your exhaust system you should look for a good shop to do the job right. I suggest you visit your local drag strip and ask some of the guys for a trusted shop.

The x-pipe you linked is the one I just put on my L98. Previously I had a 2.5" front y-pipe (w/out cats) and a Borla 2.5" rear y-pipe and the stock single cat (gutted). I had a local exhaust shop cut the rear of the front y-pipe and the front of the rear y-pipe and then weld the x-pipe in place with some extensions. They did a great job and my systems is now basically true duals with an x-pipe.
