Default transmission expert needed

I have a 96 auto and the 3rd gear clutches will not fully engage. My wife drove it home about 15 miles the other day with it slipping and it smelled like the engine was on fire when she drove up. The transmission oil smells a little burnt now, but not bad. It has 70,000 miles and has always shifted flawlessly. It will shift into third, but at 4000 rpm it will only do about 40 mph and you can feel it slipping. 1st and 2nd is smooth and strong. I read somewhere about a shifting solenoid. Is that something I can check, change, or is a possibility? If so, how would I go about it and any other help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

3-4 clutch pack is toast. Time for a rebuild.

just talked to him and he is a really good guy! He told me I was hosed and looking at more than I can stand for a month or two. He offered to help me and get a parts list together, but I do not have facilities or a place to build one. Sounds like a complete rebuild on a 68,300 mile transmission that has been serviced and well kept.

Default rebuild or buy

anyone know anything about the Jasper rebuilds as far a how much they are and dependability or any where else that has a rebuilt for sale? It is a DD.
Jasper has a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. Might as well be 1,000,000 with 3 years.

Don't have any experience with them - I rebuilt mine. At least you know what the problem is for sure now.
