Default Motor???

I have a 85 vette-- It had a Jasper LT-1 motor installed in 2000.. Called Jasper to find out what was the HP-- Don't know if it is a class 1(230HP) or a class 2(with around 290 Hp). Called them and they told me to look for a red tag by the freeze plug.. Well of course I dont have a red tag by the freeze plug.. Talk to Jasper and they don't have another way to tell me.. Tried to locate the last owner--no luck... Can anybody tell me is their another way to find out the motor HP besides putting it on a Dyno??? You would think I would be able to tell just by driving it but I just don't know.....

Thanks $300vett

I would think you could tell by driving it 60 HP is a big difference. Have someone with an stock 85 take you for a spin and compare. In the end it doesn't really matter, you are either happy with the performance or not.

This will not work, stock 85's do not have an LT-1. Maybe you can drop the pan and look for 4 bolt mains? The vettes had 4 bolt and I think everything else had 2.

The LT-1 was installed in the 2000.... so it is not a stock motor... Jasper put out 2 different LT-1 motors-- a stock and one with more HP....
thanks $300vett

Corvettes had 2 bolt mains. An 85 should be an l98. Only 1 engine ava. the 230 horse I believe.

Can you find a pic of what the engine looks like? Then we could tell you what it is.

If you don't want to put it on a dyno, then the next best way is to take it to a quarter mile drag strip and do a few runs. Again, 60 HP shouldbe pretty apparent. Let us see your numbers from the track, and we'll give you a good guess.

I am currently in Lynchburg VA I cannot find a dyno close... I am looking for one that is not 500 miles away..... I stay in Roanoke Rapids NC but cannot find one close by.. But I am most willing to put on a Dnyo....

The pics in your profile are of an L98 with tuned port injection, No Lt1. More than likely, its the "230 hp" one. For it to have 290, it would need a decent cam and heads, which you would probably notice.

I'll bet they used different rocker arms on the diffent engines. Maybe if you pull the valve covers you'll be able to tell.

Lt-1 Corvette engines are all 4 bolt mains! This is a replacement engine, an LT-1 according to the OP.

Looks like an early L98 to me.
YES, the LT1s and the LT-1s are 4-bolt mains, in the vette. geesh

Ever seen a LT1 with perimeter valve cover bolts? LT-1 yes
