Dana 44 Gear Swap 3.73 > 4.10/1 - Is housing change required?
I'm considering swapping out my Dana 44 3.73 gears for 4.10 or 4.11 on my '93. I have read where any gear larger than 3.92 would require a housing change but, I also read a post that said it would nominally support 4.10/1.
Does anybody know for sure if the 4.10/1 can fit in my existing Dana 44 housing or does it require a larger / different housing?

not 100% sure but i think you will have to go to a 4 series posi or buy thick gears, not sure if they even make a 4;11 thick gear someone smarter then me will chime in

The outer, aluminum, carrier and caps housing doesn't change for any ratio swap. The internal, differential, ring gear case, sometimes does. The Viper 4.10 gears fit the standard D44, three series diff case. Other 4.09, 4.10. or 4.11 gears would depend on their original application, but likely, need an internal case change.

I had 4.09s installed and yes I had to go with a different carrier. there is a different one for 3 and 4 series. When I went back to 3.73s i had to buy a new carrier again which was hard to find but I eventually did. I'd reccomend 3.92s if youre looking at 4.10s
