was wondering...if anybody has had this problem...and if so...how do you get rid of the stuff...
My 1990 still has its original rear view mirror and I was wondering...it had developed a scum like brown corrosion on certain places on the mirror....how do you get rid of it...?...or can you? it seems to be within the mirror almost...I have tried all sorts or powerful cleaners....nothing touches it....
I have even touched it and scatched it with a razor knife...like I said...seems to be embedded in the mirror....?
I mean I can live with it...and don't really want to pay like $100 to get a new mirror....so any help much appreciated....
Bogus is right - it's the silver going off - take the mirror assembly apart and take the mirror to a glass place that makes mirrors, they will be able to cut you one to size then just put the mirror assembly back together back together - a lot cheaper than having to buy a complete new mirror.
$200+ for a Rear View Mirror is crazy... Just to get a compass and temperature sensor in the mirror? I'd just get a new mirror cut and replace just the mirror.
I had a bad one too. took it out and had the glass shop put one of the little metal mounts on the glass. Then put in one of the late model GM electronic ones that dims by itself when lites hit it from behind. I got it out of a Caddy in the junkyard for $15. I love it. all you have to do is slip it on the mount and run a hot and a ground wire to it under the window trim.
The glass piece is pretty cheap. I got one from 18carfan through the mail, after I cracked my glass being too rough washing the car.
My '93 has heated mirrors - had to pop off the old glass, cut the wiring, and splice the new wiring to the old harness. The instructions come with the glass.
Hardest part was snapping the new glass back onto the trunnion without breaking the glass again.
