Default Help with a few things please

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi everyone i have been away from this part of the forum for a while, finally put my 86 on the road after 2 years, issues

how do i take off the rear side markers? one of them only comes on when it wants to. would this affect the way the turn signals work?

how do i change the headlight bulbs? one is burned and my high beam indicator in the dash is on all the time, it seems brighter when the high beam are on then goes dim, is it because one buld is burned?

I can't get the cap on the power steering tight, is that a common problem?

thanks for all help

1. To change the bulb/clean the socket on a side marker, just slide yourself behind the back wheel and twist and pull the flexible (feels like rubber) socket out of the marker light. No need to remove the marker/lens itself. The front side marker socket can be accessed from the inside when the hood is up.

2. Change a headlight bulb - I did this a while ago and can't recall if I had to remove the painted cover to access the 4 screws that hold the stainless steel frame around the headlamp. Don't mess around with the alignment screws when removing the headlamp or you might find one headlight pointing up in the trees - good for raccoon hunting!

3. High beam indicator - hmm... I've never heard of the high beam indicator being a sign that you have a blown headlamp. I know that a signal indicator will glow sometimes if you have a blown signal light bulb and the headlights are on - that was on the old cars before daytime running lamps. If the high beam indicator does not go out after changing the headlamp, I'd be suspecting your multi function switch has a low amperage short.

- A re-statement of the obvious for the umpteen millionth time - unfortunately, the advice doesn't help a guy out very much when they have a question. There is a wide range of technical knowledge (some of it presumed) on this forum and I figure that if someone is asking a reasonable question - they deserve a helpful answer. If buddy asked the same questions at you local cruise night - would the answer always be - "buy a FSM"? Isn't this also part of the purpose of a forum?

On my 86. the plastic cap on the PS Resevoir tightens when you turn it counter-clockwise. If that's not working, probably the plastic threads on the bottle, or the cap, are stripped somehow? If so you would need a new bottle and/or cap?! As I recall, there is no gasket of any sort on the PS cap or bottle? Cheers.

GOOD ! Nice to know !

how do i take off the rear side markers? one of them only comes on when it wants to. would this affect the way the turn signals work?
might be a bad bulb ! change all of those bulbs

how do i change the headlight bulbs? one is burned and my high beam indicator in the dash is on all the time, it seems brighter when the high beam are on then goes dim, is it because one buld is burned?

Yes it is,its telling you that there is a problem
with your sealed beam, just replace it,i had this problem with an F-BODY.- its normal

I can't get the cap on the power steering tight, is that a common problem?
Get another GM cap from a friend, and test it
im 95% sure its the cap.
You can buy a new one or get one from a junkyard

thanks for all help

you're welcome !

The high beam indicator staying on means a headlight is out. You DO have to remove the painted headlight shroud to change the lamp. Here's a little know trick to access the two small screws on the side of the shroud.

Pull the headlight **** all the way out to rotate the headlights. Then very slowly (and I do mean slowly) push the **** back in. When the headlights start to close, pull out the switch a hair and they will stop allowing you to easily remove the screws. This may take some practice but it's not difficult. Timing is everything........

In the alternative of course you could manually rotate the lights but why mess with their settings if you don't have to.
