Default 92 LT-1 cuts out WOT

My 92 did something odd recently. Car runs great, recently had to replace ECM, it wasn't "seeing" the right O2 sensor, failed emissions...but that was in May, its ok now after I changed it. But...about a month ago, decided to let it stretch its legs and gave it WOT running up a highway entrance ramp. Halfway up, engine dies. I was stunned first, then aware that I was on a highway entrance ramp with no shoulder lane, so neutral, and coast for a bit, key off, five seconds later went to start it, started ok, ran fine all the way home, but didn't get on the throttle much.

Drove it a few times since, no incidents, but I'm real easy on the gas pedal. Yesterday, from stop sign in middle of nowhere, drove on, then gave it about 60-75% throttle. Choked up and died. Again, coast a bit, key off, then key on, start, runs fine. Drove it about 30 miles last night, but never got on throttle again.

It's a 92 LT-1

Scan tool, only thing really odd was IAT showint 141 degrees for over 15 minutes, then dropped to 90 degrees and held steady. That in my garage that was NOT 90 degrees. I'm in central Texas...it was 101 outside and the garage was in the sun, and the A/C in the car was on. So that sensor is suspect. I was looking for an odd display on TPS when I ran from off pedal to full throttle position, but it was ok.

No codes shown.

I'm suspecting the fuel filter, but looks like need to remove right side cat to get at it. Any wisdom on changing that without dropping the cat?

Yes, I didn't remove the cat when I did mine. Not a whole lotta room so I found it easier to remove that section of line between the fuel filter and the fuel rail. Be sure to release pressure and undo the easy(er) end of the filter, and the return line has a fitting at that location too. Undo the lines at the fuel rail, where the black and gray rubber covers are, using a disconnect tool which slides in. Lastly there is a bolt holding the two lines to the black plastic hvac unit. Like anything on an old car it may help if you spray some PB Blaster on the fittings a while before you start.

Mine did the same thing for the last 3 years, only did it once and a while, but always on a on ramp and entering traffic. Turned out to be the Ing module. It finally failed completely about 3 weeks ago. It sits behind the coil. Also only did it when it was hot outside 90 degrees + and the engine was around 193 degrees.

My 2 cents.

Great info, guys. The cutout was only when hot (I'm in Austin, TX...that's anytime after Feb 9) and the fuel filter tip is great, I'm gonna gety under it this weekend. It needs chnaging, 135,000 miles on the original. -GeorgeC

Well I dunno that temp has anything to do with the flow of a filter, but sounds like it does need a changin'

My 2 cents.

Danah wins
It finally died completely Sunday evening. Ignition control module. Back in service yesterday. Thanks for the input. Our cars must be cousins, made the same day. GeorgeC

What will happened if you completely remove the catalytic converters , and install pipes instead???
Performance wize and sound wize how loud and how strong it is going to be?????? I dont care about the inspection issue, for now! I am going to install HHO system on it and that will drop the emission!

You will pick up very little if any performance from eliminating the cats. Also, if your car is a 96 it will thow a SES code.
