Default Cranking and Sputtering...Help!

Here are the facts so far....

90 Model stock, automatic

Over the last few weeks under accelleration I will occassionally get what seems to be a miss...no fire and no sound from the motor for one or two seconds....then she comes back with a vengence. Then the other day it did it again but stayed down for about 10 seconds while I just coasted. Then she fired back up and kept on. This is all while driving down the road. A few minutes later I shut her down and she would not re-crank for several hours. She did crank and at idle sounded fine. When given any gas she acted like she was not getting any fuel and kind of sputtered along. Then she stalled. Again no crank.

Since then I have changed the following:
New cap and rotor
New ignition modual
New fuel pump and screen
New Coil

Last night she crank and ran okay on the test run. Well at least till I jumped on it and then the bogging and sputtering like before. But she did not stall and kept going. This morning no crank.

I have tried unhooking the vaccum from the fuel pressure regulator. No change. No crank.

Suggestions? Help? Thanks guys.

Oh and I did do a search. Alot of the results no longer have any information on them.

Again thank you. Save me!!

Have you hooked up a fuel pressure guage? That's where I'd start, and hope you looked for any sign of fuel in that vacumn line?

After checking for pressure you might want to check your injectors. If they are original it might be time. Check out the very first sticky at the top of the forum here. Jon has some very informative videos on there.

Thanks for the replies. I am one of those mortgage guys that have been starving and I am doing body work right now. One of the techs I work with handles our mechanical and he has suggested changing the fuel filter to make sure that there are no blockages.

So I am heading home now to do just that. I am waiting on my tool guy to get me a fuel line pressure tester as well as a fuel injector testor (tests the electrical current).

If nothing else I might just have to throw a match into the tank on this thing!!

Here's the update. Pretty sure that Advance sold me a bad fuel pump. When I depress the Shrader valve the gas barely sprays out. I would say I get about 6 inches of height out of it.

I spryed starting fuild into the intake and she fired right up. Of course that only lasted for a couple of seconds and then she died. So I now know it is fuel and not fire.

I changed the fuel filter and am on the way home right now with an AC/Delco fuel pump I picked up from the local Chevy dealer. Don't worry, i bought it through the shop I work for so I only paid $71.00. Alot cheaper than all the other part houses for their brand!

So if she runs tonight, I will be a happy camper. Oh, I did check the injectors with a test light. All good there. Not sure about a blockage, but she should run even with a clogged injector. So I am not too worried about that.

If swapping the pump does not do it I will break down and buy a pressure test kit and go from there.

Thanks!
