Ok... I had no heat in my 84, when someone suggested replacing my thermostat due to the fact that the motor would not go hotter than 150 degrees. I did the replacement of the thermo and acctually realized there WAS NO thermostat in there to begin with. After checking coolant levels and warming the car up, i turned the heat on... (car was at 210 degrees) and i got warm air. 10 mins later, FREEZING cold again .
Please give opinions and suggestions to what else could be wrong. Thanks!
hi ,did you check your heather control valve?check to see if the 2heather hoses that go into your heather core are getting hot.if you heather valve is not working that will pervent the hot coolant from going into your core .good luck greg84
Did you check to see if the coolant level dropped after you turned the heater on. Here's what I think happened:
You drained the radiator to replace the t-stat.
You refilled the radiator.
Started the car, but didn't turn the heater to heat.
Engine got to normal operating temp, and you topped off the coolant level.
You capped the radiator.
Turned on the heat.
Everything was cozy for a few minutes.
If you don't have the heater set to high heat while you are topping off the coolant, there is no flow to the heater. When you do eventually turn the heat on, it robs the available coolant from your system to fill the heater core and lines, then there is insufficient coolant to circulate.
Try topping off the coolant, with the engine running, and the haeter on high and full blast.
To add to the suggestion. Open the radiator cap, top it off with coolant, turn the heat on full, and start the engine. Get the engine up to operating temperature ( you can see the coolant flowing in the radiator). Rev the engine to 2000-2500 rpm and hold it there. You will see the coolant level drop. Again top off the radiator with coolant and put the radiator cap on, then let the engine return to idle.
