I just cut my wires and lengthened them so that the wires ran along the snorkel on the passenger side of the car up to the air filter inlet.

I drilled a hole in the side of the filter cover that was slightly smaller than the threads and basically used the Sensor threads to tap into the plastic hole ID, you cna put some silicone on the OD of teh threads for a good seal.

You can see in this picture on the filter housing what I did.

You can see it sticking up on the pass side of this pic back when I had the Miniram.

Understanding what the MAT sensor is supposed to accomplish would help, as it iwas not designed to soley read the intake temp. as such. If it is not recalibrated your tune will change based on seasonal temps.
it does, runs rich longer the colder it is outside. also, my car is a '90 with the 737 ecu. this makes a ton of sense. i need to figure out a way to get that sensor moved up to a warmer area.

I have seen on this forum that on a MAF car the MAT sensor is only used in connection with the EGR system.

I've read that several time from the tunner guys who seem to know their way around the EPROM look-up tables.

Whereas the SB based TPI system use both air temp and manifold pressure to calculate air flow so MAT location "could" make a difference in tuning.
If air temp is indeed critical, consider how accurate is laying the sensor on top of the manifold vs putting it into the intake air stream?? The air temp atop the intake manifold would be higher than that in the moving intake air stream, IMO??

i was just thinking the same thing 65, in front of the TB would ideal. however, the stock location was in the manifold wasn't it? if it was heatsoak from the metal would likely raise it to the same place that straping it on the manifold would.

For the 165 the mat does not have the same effect, as you mentioned. In fact my sotware doesn't have any tables for mat.
The 727/730 is different (posters car is a 90), while it is not critical, and it's not really about accuracy of the sensor or location, it is values based on temps. placed in the tables. The ecm can only use those values to calculate from, it cannot reason that it would need to change the values to comp. the achieve the same numbers (blm).
For an example, if your tune was nailed at a solid 128 blm in 70 deg. temps., that same tune on a 40 degree day would be noticeably richer (approx.124 blm). This area of tunning does take some real time, and will also have an effect when the car goes into PE.
