Hello all,
I just purchased an 87 coupe and it has some issues. I am going to Carlisle and I thought I would purchase some items to help me with this Corvette. (I also have a 63 and a 76) This 87 is my 7th Corvette and I try to work on my stuff when I can.
I just had a mechanic I trust replace the EGR valve and both burn off relays. It showed an EGR code. It still has semi-rough Idle and hard start after sitting more than 15-20 minutes. I think it is fuel pressure drop because you can cycle the key switch on and off a few times and it seems to build pressure and start better. I have not done a pressure check. I put the correct plugs in it this morning and the old plugs were kinda wet with fuel. I am still getting a check engine light after 10-15 minutes of driving. The light stays off on the next start until the next 10-15 minutes of driving. It runs fine at speed and I get 22-24 MPG and it has the 3:07 gear. This Corvette also needs valve seals as I get the blue smoke on start. Per the car fax that came with the car it has sat for periods of time. I am fascinated with some of the stuff posted by FIC about the injectors and some of my drag racing friends (Camaro TPI Boys) say my problem is injectors.
Another one of my "issues" is that the converter has stuttered on me a couple of times upon hard acceleration. I just put the Dr Tranny stutter stop in it and I hope it works.
As usual, I appreciate any and all inputs and advice.
See you in Carlisle!!!

Thanks Cutter Ace,
Got any info like a procedure and diagram?
No, I guess that was my first point was that I'm going to shop around at Carlisle. I would love some recomendations on what scan tool to purchase and will it come with code info. Anything else I might need along that line also.
Thanks,
Robert
The most important diagnostic tool, IMO, is a copy of the FSM by HELM.
For a scan tool decide if you want a laptop based tool or a stand alone one. For the laptop tool all you need is the connectiong cable and software. I use an AutoXray.
An FSM is your best bang for the buck, it is worth it's weight in gold w/ C4's. You should be able to pick one up for half the price of a new one at Carlisle.
I have an AutoXray scanner, but a laptop is better.
You have a vacuum leak. The test is easy, and must be done correctly to find the leak.
I believe he is referring to the propane or starting fluid test. You take a can and spray each line along the length of the line and if it changes in idle you found a bad line. I don't know the details beyond that, as i have never done it myself.
