Default Timing Mark

Does anyone have a photo of where the timing mark is on an 86? The chilton book is telling me but I do not see it and am wondering if it is gone. But before I decide that, I thought maybe someone could be more specific or even have a photo.

Thanks in advance!!

I don't have a pic but you should be able to see it from the drivers side above the harmonic balancer and below the water pump. My guess is that its covered with gunk. Spray some degreaser down there and wipe with a rag.

It can be very hard to see even if it is not dirty, because you can only see a few degrees of the wheel at any one time. Last time I adjusted the timing I had to turn the motor over a little at a time untill I could see it with a bright flashlight. Then I marked it with a paint marker so it would be easier to find later. If you can see the small plate that marks the degrees before and after t.d.c. you should be able to see the timing mark as long as it is not facing away from you.

Thanks for the help. I wiped some of the crap away and I can see where the timing indicator used to be. So it at least gives me an idea where the timing should be.

Take a yellow crayon and go over the balancer lightly a few times. Just like you were doing a grave rubbing. Then the marks will pop right out.

I lost sight of the timing marks on my 86(gone), but it was the first symptom of the harmonic balancer going bad. The elastomer was failing, and the whole thing was moving back against the timing chain cover. If it just starts to move a little, you can end up with some incorrect timing because the TDC mark is no longer at TDC. I had mine replaced, not too expensive, looked like more trouble than I was willing to tackle. Good Luck

Had the same problem as Dennis. After I replaced the harmonic balancer (it wasn't too bad) I found my timing had been set WAY off. Timed it with the new balancer and it ran like a new car.

That might explain why my marking is gone. I had my balancer replaced about 4 years ago. Must have took it off then. Seems like I timed it ok though last night. Did not drive it today to work so I will have to take it for a spin later.

Thanks all!!
