85 corvette.........new batt, new starter..........dome light stays brite...but it will jump start ? .........pos batt cable looks good....seems like something is not triggering the starter......jumped the clutch switch, pulled the fuse on the starter interupter..............there are three wires swagged together along with the batt wire going to the same lug on the starter solinode,.........what are they? wiring diagram is no help.
If you run a temp wire from the starter solenoid terminal (purple wire ) to the battery , it will turn start, (make sure out of gear first ).
That will confirm starter is working OK.
Do you have 12V at the clutch switch with key at start?
Bad starter switch at base of column?
Hey Leadfoot, Was out at the Dyno all day with a couple of guys from the Utah Vettes forum. If you did not get it fixed today, shoot me a PM over there with your phone number and I will be more than happy to run over and help out if I can.
What do you mean by, "..but it will jump start?". If your engine will start by jumping a battery across your battery, then you must have a defective battery, or poor cable connections to your battery (you didn't say you looked at the neg battery cable connection). You could also have a discharged battery. Measure the battery voltage at the battery terminals, 12.0 volts and below is a badly discharged battery. 12.9 volts and above, fully charged and linear in between. Measure the battery voltage while someone holds the ign key in crank position, battery voltage must not fall below 9.0 volts or you have a discharged battery, poor cable connections, or a battery at the end of its life.
I also have a battery tester if you want to load test your battery, however I am thinking that by jump start, your talking about jump starting the starter not the battery. Again I am guessing it is the purple wire (If I remember my color correct) that has somehow either gotten disconnected, pulled, or heated from the exhaust or something. It will be the one that is coming from the key switch. Either way, let me know if you would like some help with it.

what is this starter switch at the base of the column?.........is that the starter interrupe from the thieft deterent system.

That sounds like the ignition switch. There is a rod that runs down the column from the key cylinder to the ignition switch.
Does your solenoid have two small connections? One marked "R" and another marked "S"? If so, that is the older, points ignition style solenoid. It may be used for a more universal application of the starter part number. It is perfectly acceptable, but it does provides a wrong place to connect the purple wire. The purple wire goes to the "S" terminal, if there is a choice.

my 2 cents is positive batt connection I had the same problem corroted inside rubber insulater,

RACE ON!!!
one terminal on the solenoid............so I don't have this ignition switch ?........the battery and cable are good........something is stopping the power to the soleniod...........good to hear from you again CFI......................race on
The key in the column operates the starter switch!
If your battery terminals are OK and you can hot wire the starter to turn then there is a fault in the control wiring to the starter terminal.
You need to track though starter wiring path from starter switch through enable relay / clutch switch/etc to starter terminal.
FSM would be handy.
