Default Removing A/C and electronic climate control question.

I am removing the A/C on my '88 track car project and remember something about when the A/C plug by the fuel lines is unplugged that the main fan runs. Does that wire need to be grounded?

Also there is a large heat sink, the blower control module, can that get enough airflow by relocating it in by the blower instead of in the evap housing which I intend to remove? I've been wondering if the whole module and heat sink can be deleted by using a manual blower fan switch. I intend to keep the heater core and blower.

Any thoughts?

I do not believe the fans will run with the plugs off. I know my 85 does not!

As for the heat sink, Get rid of it! It only is used for low and medium fan. I removed it and just have OFF or HI fan only now. The only reason I would need it is for defog and would only use high for that anyways.

Just my suggestions, good luck

It seems with both plugs off the fan doesn't run, so this is good. I remember testing something awhile back and unplugging one which made the main fan stay on.

With the fan on high the blower control module got a bit to hot to touch.

SCCA, think you'll ever bring that car up to Road America?

I've got the site prepared and am thinking of using some sheet aluminum to make the blower air connect back up. Should cost around five bucks. I'm still not sure what to do about the blower control module. Here's a pic:

It'll be pretty easy to bend up a box then maybe glue it in. A few screws would be nice but that area is super thin fiber.

Because I had a spare housing and nothing better to do.Fibreglass over cardboard pattern.
Enough room to mount the blower module in the top by turning it 90 degrees

Rodj, good idea there with making a fiber part. I was looking at it and thinking about making the box of bent aluminum go into the square opening then I could run some sheet metal screws through the fiber into bent back flanges on the inside of that area. So a square tube into the opening and sealed from the back.

Your module is in there and has stayed working OK?

Did you leave that big heat sink on the module?

Yes , fits fine.

I bolted the housings together , screwed them to a board , cut away what I didn't want , then glassed up the sides to make one unit.
Once it was one piece I cut away all the lumps and bumps around the flange area to tidy it up.
I basically cut a straight line from the flat section outboard of the fan housing to the lip on the other side.I measured the hole through firewall and made cross section at that point the same volume so as not creat air flow restriction.
I then used cardboard to form up the top and glassed over.

1st prototype , not real pretty but functional.

PM me your email addresses and I will get some pics together.

Thanks for the tips Rodj! I'm thinking of doing away with the module and just using a manual switch to turn the blower on.

I ran the car today and the main fan is stuck on, I figured that would happen. No one has had to change those A/C wires around?

I had to jumper the big plug on my '87 to stop fans running. Must switch open with pressure drop in line when A/c on..

for the 165 ecm, have you tried to "disable" or zero out the ac in tables/constants (depending on bin, also any add-ons) ?

I will try that, thank you! I don't have all the equipment to edit the chip as of yet.

In other news the car did fine temp wise with rotating the reverse rotation water pump, the other direction. Which is good, I will deal with that issue later.

Edit, twisting the dark green and black A/C plug wires together made the fan not run any more.
