Default Instillation and Parts Pricing

I have a 1988 L-98 and I was wondering how much it would cost to bore in to a 383. Also to purchase a crankshaft, camshaft (any suggestions), pistons, and a gasket set. I just wanted to get a ballpark figure at how much this would all cost including the labor.
Thanks

Demon you asked a very simple question but there is no simple answer. Depends entirely on what you want. For a reasonable build I would SWAG $5,000.

Just a thought here....you can get a create motor for under $4,000 and you get a warranty is there a reason you want to keep your block?

I have already talked to these people and you can have them build a motor with there block or you can ship them your block to build with. They also give a 8 year 80,000 mile warrenty..

Just did this on my 96 LT4 with the help of a friend here on the Forum doing all of the motor build for me in my garage. I had a 383 rotating assembly, but for my goals with the LT4 (~550chp) There was very little that I already had that I could use. The only exceptions to that were the Crane Gold Non-SA Roller Rockers I got here on the forum and a brand new LT4 intake that I also got here on the forum. Other than that, everything else was ordered during my build for use. I wanted everything to be RIGHT! My remaining 383 rotating assembly will be used for my 91 L-98 build this winter. BUT, Just to give you an idea of how much here's the starting point and when I was done it was three times the amount of money and three times the lenght of time to do everything. I did motor and the full suspension while I was there, plus anything that I found wrong with the car (New Slave Cyl, Undercoating, New Power stearing Pump, ect....)

Block Work - ~ $600
Rotating Assy Balance - $ ~$300
King Pro Rod Rod Bearings - $39.99
King Pro Main Bearings - $42.99
Dura-Bond Cam Bearings - $22.99
Scat Q-Lite 6" rods - $398.70
Manley Pistons 4.030" - $429.95
4.035 File Fit Hastings Powerflex Rings - $ $87.95
Eagle 4340 Lightweight Crank - $609.00
Victor Reinz Head Gasket - $15.95
ARP Oil Pump Stud - $4.31
ARP Oil Pump Shaft - $16.95
ARP Main Bolts - $31.95
ARP Head Bolts - $67.95
ARP Header Bolts - $36.39
ARP Blancer Bolt - $22.88
Professional Products 59mm TB (Polished)- $179.95
Cadillac Racing Lifters - $274.82
ATI Super Damper - $445.00
Reeds Custom Cam - $300.00
Champ Pans Custom CP100LTRB-RR - $258.00
Champ Pans HV Oil Pickup - $28.46
Ford "Jolly Green Giant" 42lb injectors - $320.00
AFR 195 Comp Ported Eliminators - $2600.00
Crane Gold 1.6 7/16th Non-SA - ~$200
Chromemoly Pushrods - $86.95
Mildon HD Oil Pump - $39.95
FelPro Master Gasket Set - 145.95
Spec Stage 2+ Clutch - $531.90
Spec Single Mass Steel Flywheel - $269.10
Cloyes Double Roller timing chain - $83.95
Misc bolts, plugs, NPT fittings - $ 30.00
Various Sensors (Knock, Cyl, Water, Oil Temp/Level) - $200.00
NGK TR-55 - $20.00
MSD Wires - $90.00
Percy's Dead Soft Alum Header Gasket - $28.99
68" Accesory Belt - $30.00
Valve Cover Gaskets - $20.00
2 Gallons of Rotella-T - ~$40.00
AC Delco Oil Filter - ~$5.00

I'm too tired to add the total on this up, but this doesn't include the long tube Exotic Muscle headers and high flow extension with cats that I had made for this build. Nor does it include any of the block clearing/prep work, intake gasket matching, and intake plenum work that was done by Will at no charge. Goodluck and keep us posted however you go!

One think I need to let you know............The motor as it sits, is normally just one piece of the entire picture. It's all the little bits and pieces that are going to kill you during the install that most people don't account for and make a Gazillion runs back and forth to the parts store or Summit/Jegs to get. Either way, expect the unexpected and make sure you do all the research and question asking that you can to get the best price and save as much unnecessary or wasteful spending as possible.

We do some 383 street builds when there is some extra time in the shop it really depends what your budget is and the qualitey of parts you want for your engine.

On 383's have your block sonic tested before any work is done to make sure you have a good foundation.

We try use quality parts like the Callies Compstar cranks and for 595.00 there a good deal, Ya we can buy 4340 cranks for 375 dollars but the sizing and straightness and roundness of the journal don't compre to a Callies crank.

The same with rods, pistons, rings ETC.

So far we have not really done and budget builds using cheap parts and we like to dyno the engines before they go in to make sure there are no problems and do a timing sweep ETC.

Here are some links to look over.

P.S. I'll keep my other thougths to myself right now, BUT as a word of warning, ask ALOT of questions and please be careful. Following a Piper in Shiny clothes might put you in ALOT deeper than YOU need, and no better quality than anyone else on here that's PROVEN themselves!

AND Typically OWN and Work with VETTES!

I have seen guys farming out balancing and using other shops and equipment to do work on some one elses engine and using what I consider subquality parts and equipment as well. LOL

You should be dealing with someone that does all the work in house and has a good reputation out there doing performance work.

Just be aware of want to bees!!!
