Default '87 Starting Problems

This problem right now is OCCASIONAL but could become chronic so I want to nip it in the bud now: when parked uphill on an incline, car will not start. It shows good battery but no click when trying to start it....nothing happens, just silence. This is an automatic transmission so when I take it out of Park and let it roll back just a bit and jam it back into Park (not good, I know!!) it will turn over and start. I am trying to decipher whether this is a Starter problem or a Transmission problem with the interlock system???? There doesn't seem to be any problem on level ground. The transmission has no other problems other than a very small fluid leak. Help Please.

The vette will not start in neutral. I tried running it thru the gears but the only way I could get out of the """dead zone" was to let it roll back and jam it into Park. Whatever it is ""freed up" and it was ok to start then. Re a starter, I was first leaning towards the starter being the problem (dead zone) but I want to be certain before I get one. Is there any other diagnostics I could do to narrow down the culprit??? CAB

Well folks, it cost me a bundle but the problem ended up being the starter. An old mechanic trick was to bang on the starter (what you can see of it on an '87 is practically nothing) and it started right up. I know I didn't have the tools or wherewithall to do the job of changing it out. Thanks one and all for all the ideas of what it could be----starter was one of the many ideas. Others fyi were battery, neutral safety switch, vats, wiring, starter relay, ignition. Obviously the most expensive I happened to get.

I just logged on to ask for information with the same problem! I recently replaced the battery and alternator on my '86. It has been starting up without a problem. I just turn the key and off she goes! Yesterday on my way home from work I stopped at a gas station to take out a mortgage to fill up the tank. When I tried to start it up, nothing happened!! No clicking, no humming, nothing! The voltage read 12.3 and the lights, etc. were bright. I tried going moving the shift in and out of park, and made sure the steering wheel lock was engaged prior to turning the key. I called for my wife to come and get me, opened the hood and stared at the alternator and battery. I then moved the battery a bit to make sure that all of the wires were tight.

After waiting for a few minutes, I decided to give it a try again. It started up as usual! I'm hesitant to use the car as I don't want to get stuck. How did you determine that your starter was the problem? I'd hate to spend the cash on a new one and find that it was something else.
Thanks,
Ed

Ed, I didn't. I left it up to my mechanic to make the determination of what it was. Unfortunately it cost me dearly. First, getting it towed to the repair garage-$84, second, the cost of a starter-$380 installed. What you don't want is to get stranded without wheels somewhere. I think the mechanic first tackled the VATS system and found no problem there, then the battery which had enough start-voltage, then the starter. There are other "things" but diagnosing without expense is not something I felt capable of. Good Luck
