My 92 wont start. Heres the story. The other night the car was left running and ran out of gas, then apparently the battery ran down. I put gas back in her, charged the battery and nothing. I can spray a little starting fluid in the breather and it will fire up so I know its a fuel problem. I put a test light on the fuel pump harness and I'm not getting any power to the pump. Any suggestions on what I need to do or where to look next? Please give me some ideas I'm pulling my hair out...
Thanks, I was kinda leaning that way since thats a cheap item but I didnt know exactly where it was on the car. I saw autozone had it for about 8 bucks. I havent checked the codes yet because my oldest son has my computer in Springfield MO, imagine that, a 22 yr old not giving back what he borrows.......anyway........thanks, I'll try the relay and see where that gets me.............
The fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank. One reason to always keep at least 1/4 tank of fuel. The pump may be fried.
Also check the fuse to the pump.
You need to check your service manual. Not sure about '92, but GM used to be
quite strict about NOT running the tank dry. Reason: the in-tank pump was at
one time a Vickers-type or Vane pump (positive displacement). The pumps had
plastic vanes, which require fuel as a lubricant/ coolant IIRC. Once the pump
ran DRY, the pump destroyed itself in a few seconds(?). Seems to me that used
to be a big Caution in the Owner's Manual too.
You need to check your fuel pump fuse; and look around for a new Delco pump. If
the pump you have is original, even if it's not burned up it's worth replacing
as a maintenance item from time to time. Get the pump kit with a new sock also.
