Narrower C4 power steering rack needed.
I looked up in the TRW x4000 catalog and found the information on the early C4 power steering racks:
2.5 turns lock to lock
4.40 inches travel
front steer
25.50 inches center to center on the inner tie rod pivots
72 degree input shaft
M14x1.5 threads on tie rods.
I need a rack that is front steer and similar to the above, but 22.50 inches center to center.Does anyone know of a front steer factory power rack that would have this center to center distance?
Mounting is not a problem, would really rather have a Ford mount.
Thanks in advance.
Today, Sept. 2, 2008, here is where we are at.
By the way, we dismantled a C4 power rack, and it is not easily modified to make a different center to center distance.
I have seen some narrower racks from some suppliers with the hydraulic lines on the bottom, instead of the top. This make me wonder if they are "flipped" upside down, in other words, a RHD rear steer could be used as LHD front steer. Am I thinking right? Perhaps from some narrower european RHD car?
Anyone have any sources for these? A typical rebuilt rack is around $200, but if it is a specialty item, it's a lot higher ($500). It would help greatly if we knew what standard vehicle these are from.
Also do some of the newer cars sold here in the US have "front steering" and a narrower track that someone knows of that are readily available?
I'm sure I'm not the first seeking this. All constructive help and information appreciated.
Still have need of a 22.5" center to center front steer power rack.
