Why would I need to suddenly overfill my transmission to get it to work correctly?
If I overfill by a quart or so the transmission shifts and works correctly.
If I don't overfill the transmission it feels like it slips, more like the converter is slipping. It appears or feels like the transmission stays in third gear (at least I can't feel or hear it shift) and it will not shift into overdrive. No matter how far I drive or the transmission warms up it still will not work correctly. If I run the car down the road a couple miles, put it in park and shut off the car, wait a few seconds, then restart it will work perfectly from that point on till the next day. I know the oil level raises while warming up but it seems strange that I must shut off and restart to get it work.
This is my problem, I HAVE to overfill to get it to work correctly. I've had this car for years and I know the level it has been in the past. I need to know what would be wrong/failing in the transmission that would require a higher fill level.
NO, no guesses....I can do that all day myself. Looking for an explaination from someone who has had this problem or an experienced transmission man that know what their talking about.
Yes a clogged filter it could be, but another possibility is a hairline crack in the filter neck, I have seen this before and it will draw air rather than oil, the higher oil level might just be covering the crack.
Either way I would pull the pan and the filter and have a look, install a new filter and pan gasket
