Default cat on 1995 or 1996

what happens when you gut the cats that are already on the pipes on 95-96? they have a chip in the computer that reads a "check engine" light when theres something wrong with the cats so if you gut the cats that are already there or put straight pipes all the way back or put performance cats on there are you gonna mess up the computer?

'95s are still OBD1 so I'm not sure if there is a problem with gutting the cats on those. '96 and later are OBD2, so as Mackey said, yes, you'll get a check engine light. However, you have a couple options to get around this:
-Get the computer reprogrammed to ignore the OBD2 cat test
-Get O2 sensor simulators to put on the two secondary o2 sensors (the ones after the cats).

'94 and '95 have a sensor after the cat, but it won't mess up the computer if you gut them... '96 has two sensors after the cats.. and it WILL mess up the computer most likely!

Hi,
Do not gut the stock cats. Check out Random Tech. as they make a matching pair for the 1996 OBDII Vette's. I think there are some other Mfg's that make them but I do not have there names. May some one will post as there was a test in one of the vette magazines last year.

yes but how hard is it to reprogram the computer on a 96 if you remove replace or gut the cats? can hypertech or something like that do it?

The Hyper-Tech Power programmer III that I have will not do what you want. You will have to send your computer to someone to reprogram it so the O2 sensors will not be read by the computer. There are several shops that can make more power than a Hyper-tech and do SPECIAL programming but my Vette was still in warranty and I wanted to be able to change the programming back to stock in case I had to take the car to the Chevy Dealership. The other reason I would not remove or gut the cat's that my Vette is my daily driver and it will NOT pass Texas State Inspection if you do this and I think you will have this problem in your state too. You will only gain a few H.P. by doing this and not be legal. Random and some other other companys make some very good high flow cat's that work with out decreasing your H.P. Enjoy your Vette.
