I've been considering a cam change on my stock 1990 L98. My question is what about the valve springs? Wouldn't it be necessary to replace the stock springs, thus having to pull the heads to have them machined to accept the new springs? I have read many post on cam changes but few have mentioned the springs and machining. Thanks for the info.....
how big of a cam are you going with? In most cases you'll have to have your heads machined to except new springs. If you are considering the LPE 219 cam then I reccomend that you use their springs and have your stock heads machined to accomodate them. I tried a Hi Po Z28 spring and they simply did not work with my cam, the inner coils (dampners) were binding. Also the valve guide might have to be ground down in order to achieve clearance...i was told that you needed the lift of the cam + .050 for neccesisary clearance.
Thanks for the input. I had a the typical L98 coolant leak so off came the intake manifold. So here is my dilemma, I have a Super Ram setup that's been on my shelf collecting dust for the last five years. I also have a set of siamese runners. I am considering using the intake manifold along with the larger runners, porting the plenum and using a 52mm throttle body. I like the LPE 74211 camshaft, but with over .500 lift I will need to add the valve springs and modify the heads. I know this should be a no brainer desision but my intrest for this car is not some much in the high horsepower that I whant to start pulling the heads. Just a little cam to complement the new induction.
I know, you have a vette and it is suppose to go fast, but there is to much risk in street racing the days that I reserve it for the track. Hence my Big Block 69 camaro. By the way the vette is a vert. with all 96 upgrades and ZR1 wheels with just over 45k miles. Just a good car to cruise around town from time to time.
And I guess if I put all the original induction back on it may be time for me to consider selling the Super Ram setup.
