Had a new GM L-98 short block installed in my 85 vette. The guys that did the motor work wired my fan shutoff switch direct so that the motor would run cooler. Is this a good idea or really stupid? I periodically ask a question in this forum because this is my first vette. Love it and always finding out new things on Corvette Forum. Been a speed freak my whole life. Just turned 60 in November. Please be patient on some of my questions - like do the make a lift to get in and out of this thing easier? :D
Re: HELP - Fan Switch Question??? (Monkey Business)
Monkey,
Re: Getting in and out.
Fall in backwards, crawl out forwards.
I'm not that far behind you at 52. These things ARE hard to get into and out of. But the way the Vette "drives" makes it all worth it.
Re: Hardwired fan.
THis is another case of somebody trying to be smarter than the real engineers.
If the fans NEEDED to be wired on all the time, that would have been the original design. Get your temp switches and fans wired back to stock.
Welcome to the forum, I think you'll find folks here very helpful and patient.
Hope you enjoy this forum and your Vette!
Re: HELP - Fan Switch Question??? (Monkey Business)
Its stupid to wire the fan direct.
Running the fan all the time will wear it out.
The fan switch is available in many temperature ranges.
I like my setup a 180 termostat,a temp switch that comes on at 210 and off at 185.The car usually runs less than 180 but if you get in a traffic jam the fan starts doing its thing.

So we should not do any mods to the car because the "real engineers" designed the car perfectly ?
Running the fan all the time will keep your car at the thermostat temperture.
So if you have a 195 deg thermostat and the fans are hard wired, the temp will still rise to about 195 degs.
Re: HELP - Fan Switch Question??? (Monkey Business)
electric motors are designed for continous operation..it will not shortenthe life of the motor. however starting and stopping it will have a adverse effect on it though. i have mine hard wired also. this is to try and maintain a cooler operating temp.
Re: HELP - Fan Switch Question??? (Monkey Business)
I prefer to use a manual fan sw to turn my fans on and keep my coolant temp at 155 deg. You can wire both fan relays to run off the aux fan sw in the block just below and between #3 & #5 plugs.
"- like do the make a lift to get in and out of this thing easier? " Funny you should mention that. Had my Vette for nearly 2yrs now and don't even think about the "procedure" anymore. That is, until I get into the passenger seat; then all of those "natural" maneauvers (I have the wheel full down and extended) suddenly don't work anymore. Guess it's part of the fun of owning a sports car.
