Default "Remove Retainer" - Yeah right. Like how?

This is down under the convertible top cover. I'm trying to get the visor out of the car on the driver's side. The nut was easy, but there's this flat disk thing down in the hole there. How am I supposed to get it out?

I usually use a sharp chisel to split them if I can't get them any other way.

Oops. But that would mean I needed another one to put back and I don't have such an animal. Is there a special tool to get them out or are they really disposable items? ~Juliet

Is it embedded into the threads of that thing? Can you get some needlenose plyers on the edges of it and twist/pull it up at the same time?

p.s.

While you're in there, can you tell me if you happen to see a pink wire w/black stripe on it under there? I need to install something and am hoping to tap into a power source there for the driver vanity mirror. :)

I can't get the bugger out with needle noses or otherwise. :smash: I just put the thing back together. I'll deal with it later. :boxing There are 2 wires underneath. Black & white I think.... I don't recall for sure but it's all back together now. There was one of those standard GM clips on it and on mine there was a splice taped up with electrical tape. I'm sure that's why it's not working - someone tapped into it or cut it or something. ~Juliet

Don't you worry about breaking it. It's a tough little piece of metal. Just pop it out with a flatblade screwdriver and a little help from a needlenose plier. When you're done, that piece can be reused again. Good luck.

Juliet, next time in there try two small screwdrivers into the slots to rotate it. Otherwise use a screwdriver and tap it with a small hammer. Or you might drill two holes and use snap-ring pliers. The object being to rotate that piece off the threads.

I didn't try prying it. It's down embedded in the threads. I took needlenoses with the hooked tips and was able to sorta grab the sides, but not enough to rotate it. I didn't try just prying since it's down in that hole, maybe 3/8" below the top surface. I'll see if I get ambitious again after dinner. I'll check those wires for you Scorp if I do. :) ~Juliet

LOL nope. I need that map strap for my sunglasses. I'm installing a fuel pressure gauge on my a-pillar that needs power.

How about tapping into the power for the rear view mirror lights? It's switched by ignition, so you would have power to the gauge only when the key is on.

Yup, same thing with the wires for the driver's mirror also. It is just a shorter route.

Juliet, just break it, they are very cheap and all the Corvette places stock them.

I agree with 65Z01
when I did my car I took two small flat blade screwdrivers and stuck them into the slots on opposit sides then twisted them and they unscrewed right off.

If I remember correctly, http://www.corvettemagazine.com had an article on replacing these, with step-by-step pictures.

Be careful when you take the small clip off. There is a spring under it and the clip tends to go flying if you do not have your hand over it when it comes loose. Take it from experience. I unscrewed mine with a small flat screw driver. :flag

Corvette Fever claims that the item in question will back itself out if you hold a punch on the center post and gently tap the punch. I haven't tried this because it is too darn cold to work in the garage.

Thanks everyone. I'll have to put this on hold for another day or so. I've got some work stuff to finish up tonight and tomorrow is booked too. I appreciate the tips. :yesnod:
