Default 1993 ZF Gear Whine

I just purchased a 1993 ZF 6 speed vette with 68k miles and it has a gear whine in the transmission in gear 1-3. I doubt the oil has been changed, so I will be doing it. The trans shifts perfect and smooth.

What is the best oil to use that is safe and will minimize the gear whine?

Thanks a lot for you feedback as I am new to this forum.

I just had a "Blue-Tag" ZF rebuilt by the ZF-Doc, Bill Boudreau, in AZ. He used Castrol TWS 10W-60 also listed as BMW P/N 0751 000 9420

The early ZF six speeds, I believe the change from "early" to late" occurred with the 94 model year. Any 6-speed C4 with the pull up collar to reach reverse is an early model, the later models eliminated this collar and were simply a "crash-through" style, just had to push over and pull the shifter back.

I say all this because the earlier transmission had slightly straighter cut gears, while this resulted in a slightly higher torque capacity; 450 vs. 425 I think, the penalty was a bit more gear whine. The later transmissions has gears cut with a more helical taper to reduce this noise.

Hope this helps....

It's a noisy tranny.......even with lube change, you may still hear some gear noise.....great tranny's in my opinion....

I have an aluminum FW; if you think it's noisy now, if you ever go to an aluminum FW, sounds like a can of rocks banging around.....

What is the story with the syncromesh lube. Is that a factory authorized fill? Also is the 10w-60 BMW castrol factory authorized?

By the way, how many quarts does it take?

Regards,

believe ZF actually recommends the BMW Oil (Castrol TWS 10-60) as does ZFDOC.com.

Quantity is 2.1 Liters (3 containers as it is sold in 1 liter bottles).

Remember you'll need a 17mm allen key type socket.

Also, before you drain it, make sure you can open the fill and then check its level -- if low, that might also explain the whine.

And if it truely hasn't been changed before, consider changing it again in 3k miles to help get all the metal filings.

btw, did our 94 with the TWS oil, it's great... shifts like butter..

Always look for simple things like this in the tech faq sticky first.

Hey Jeff
I was wondering if you could give me a rough estimate of what it cost you to have your ZF rebuilt, and what all was actually replaced/done to the trans? Thanks and sorry for the hijack.

No problem, great question. Everyone mentions zfdoc.com, but all I get is a website that does network solutions. Is there another name for this company?

It would appear that Bill at ZFDOC.com needs to renew his 'rental' agreement for the domain name (expired 9/13/2008).

If you do call Bill, please mention it to him as his information has been invaluable to this forum.

Seems their domain name expired 0n 9/13/08 and is up for renewal.

I was able to get to some of the pages via gooogle's cached page.
