Default Built motor drivability

I took my 1993 out for a cruise today and it was driving awsome. When I drive nice and easy I'm amazed at how docile it is. It doesn't even seem like it would have the power it does. The Idle has a slight lope to it but other that that, under regular driving, you would hardly tell it isn't stock.

My goals when I had my 383 done were to make at least 450 FWHP but NOT have a lopey idle. Since I'm not a hardcore drag racer I didn't want a huge lopey cam.

The last DYNO event (Mustang Dyno)I went to it put down 380rwhp with 370tq in 95* heat with the stock resonator-back exhaust (I have EM long tubes goin into the OEM resonator back set up). I'm hoping to make the magic 400rwhp mark with new exhaust and magnaflow mufflers.

I'm seeing quite a few members on this forum that are stroking their motors and making around the same numbers..some just over the 400rwhp range.

There are a few that have posted numbers close to or in excess of 450rwhp I'm guessing they have a more aggresive cam. I was wondering about the "drivability" of those cars in regular everyday traffic.

Any thoughts and or comments??

Ive had a bunch of different exhausts on mine.. So far I love the LT1 'cat back' the best. That resonator is pure magic. I used to hate driving my C4.. The resonance was just terrible.. Now it sounds great.

I think the right headers, and you are fine.. That resonator is your friend.. Actually, if you really want SLP sells a 3" version of it for like $99.

I'm sure it sucks. I've tried a few big cam combo's. I keep going back to the Comp 503 / Crane / GM cam. (222/230, 224/230, etc).. People lose sight of the term 'street car'..

Besides, a small cam and a blower is the best combo you can have on the street. Behave like stock on cruise, in traffic. pull the front suspension on WOT.

My car is my daily-driver. It's at 466 RWHP from a 383 LT4. The cam is a somewhat large hydraulic roller;

242/252 duration @.050
.55x/.56x lift with 1.6 RR
110 LSA

I also have a light weight AL single-mass flywheel and a clutch with a very narrow engagement. However, even with all this I take the car in 10-15 miles of stop-and-go traffic each way when I go to work. It's actually a very easy car to drive, the clutch is the only thing you need to get used to.

If done right, and tuned well you'd be amazed at what you can run.

Yep like a lot of guys on here I have a built 383 built for street or strip with the works and about 450 RWHP with forged internals JE blower pistons and LT4 ported heads and intake ported to match head and gaskets.
1/6 RR and a special comp. cam 3200 stall built 4L60E tranny and Dana 44 w/373 gear.
I am set up for a pro charger D 1 w/8 lbs of boost but debating not cause I don't want to have to put in a roll cage to play.
The car gets 12 o 13 MPG on the highway at 70 and doesn't seem to mind.
The secret to having a drivable Bad Azzed car on the street is I also have a laptop programmable Accel Gen 7 computer that can be programed for a mild tune for emissions and street and a more aggressive tune for play.
You get each tune and save it to a folder and change with the push of a button.
I have these huge 42 l. injectors that are way too much for the engine w/out the pro charger but with the computer it only requires limiting the duration the things spray to make then dostile for the street and increase efficiency. Nice !
