Default 1994 calipers

hi:
this is my first post after lurking for a few months. i have a 1985 c4 front crossmember and i would like to know if i can swap out the single piston calipers for the dual piston calipers and brackets off of a 1994
c4?
do i need an adapter or is it a direct replacement? which rotor would be used? thanks for helping out a newbie.

That's an interesting question.

I don't know if that swap has been done before, but I do know that you can put C5 brakes on it with adapter brackets.

I have a 94 (12" brakes) and I just did the 13" C5 upgrade on it. The same swap for your car would the same with different adapter brackets.

Here's a link to my thread on my new brakes. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2103678

I'm extremely happy with them.

I still have my 94 calipers and abutments if you need them.

hi johnnymo63:
thank you so much for taking the time to reply. you have done a marvelous job and should be proud of the outcome. i will spend time this weekend working on the car and will report back what i find. i have the c5 rotors and the c4 is from an 85. i am guessing that they were an 11 inch rotor so i do not know what will happen but i will find out.
thanks again.
ciao,
mario

The 85 front rotors (84 thru 87) were 11.5" in diameter. The later C4 base rotors were 12", the J55 "big brake" rotors were 13". C5 rotors are 13".

The 85 will have to have some sort of adapter to properly position the caliper so it fits directly over and above any of the later rotors whether or not they are the 12" base C4 rotor, a C4 13" rotor or a C5 13" rotor. These two 13" rotors are not the same as the depth of the rotor hat (offset) is different.

You will need some sort of adapter depending on what rotor you want to use to attach the caliper abutment bracket to the 85. The front calipers will have to match the rotor; you can't use a C5 caliper on the C4 rotor and vice versa.

hi c4cruiser:
thank you for taking the time to post that information.
seeing how i already have a pair of c5 rotors, it looks like my best bet would be to find a pair of c5 calipers and the appropriate adapters (for an 85) and scrap the dual piston c4 caliper idea all together. too bad. i got a real good price for those calipers too!
ciao,
mario
