I am looking into painting the vett. I have a close friend that is a teacher he offered to have is 2nd year highschool vocational school (auto body) do all the work I just buy material.
They will have the car for 6 months.
I am going back black. No major damage to repair.
I want a driver not a 100 point show car. but i want it to look good.
probably would, but I'd like to see something they've painted, and 6 months seems like an aweful long time.
They are HS kids and they only work on it a few hours a day (if that) so that is why it takes so long it is mixed in with class room time and face kids screw off. I have not seen any finished work but I dont know that i can do any better of a job in my garage.
I wouldnt. There are so many things to take into consideration and high school kids in general have no attention to detail. I would do it the way I wanted it done. That way there would be no big mistakes!
You can et it done perfectly, fast and or cheap. Choose any two.
Six months sounds way toooooo long. Six weeks maybe. A lot could happen while it sits there. MANY boys (and some girls) will sit in the driver's seat and pretend to be Mario Andretti while flicking switches and playing with **** etc. That alone bothers the heck out of me.
I wouldn't let em touch it unless I was there and it was six weeks at the most. I'm not worried about the quality of work just incidental damage. Try explaining to your friend that everything worked before they got your car and now the thingamajiggie under the doohickey isn't there anymore and missing .... nothing but trouble coming ...
You really get what you pay for so I would find someone reasonable that I can work with and show up every other day and check for the two weeks is takes a real shop to do it ... Good luck !!!
I'd let them do it. Six months is a long while, but how much would you realistically be driving it during the winter in Ohio anyway. I'd be willing to bet they do a fine job...............its not like they're unsupervised and I'll bet they take some pride in a nice finished product
I have had both thoughts, I am a little on the fence The car getting screwed with is my biggest fear, My close friend is the principal and he assures me it will be fine. The kids respect the cars and all... They are watched very close from what i have been told
I would do it! Im still in high school as a senior and over the years i have seen some of te work that our autoshop program has done, and its not shabby at all. Most of them take great joy in working on the cars and they are gonna take care of it because its what they love to do. They wouldnt be in the class that doesnt give you any special credit if they didnt love doing it. Just keep that in mind for all of the older people on here not all teenagers are raving houlagins!

you know what you talked me into it i will keep a good journal of pics. I am sure it will look better than what i could do. I am finding out that when God gave me the talent to sing and play guitar he did not give me any for any think mechanical. Doesnt mean i dont love it or wont keep tring but i know i suck at it.
I say go for it. Look its a corvette, Im sure the students would want it to look its best when its all said and done. I took two years in autobody my junior and senior year and I know if I got to work on a vette I would take care of it like its mine.
Man, thats a tough call, but with all I've done to mine ($), and it's no trailer queen, I'd probably pass. I could just see something going wrong, and six months is along time.
Did he give you a ball park cost on the materials? I guess that depends on what your willing to spend on a paint system too though. Would they be doing base coat/clear coat?

base coat and clear and i purchase them and take them to him only thing they "charge"e for is sand paper. like 50 bucks.
Mine took 6 months to strip, prep and paint. When the bodywork
was done it was too cold to paint. Will you be able to inspect each
stage of the job? If so, I would. Benny
