forgive my ignorance for I don't know a whole lot about transmissions.
My transmission is going out...sounds REALLY bad and slips alot. If i have to get it rebuilt, is this a good time to change the gears? I was thinking of going to 3.73s. What all is involved in rebuilding the transmission? How much extra, if any, will it cost to put in new gears. Will the stock backend handle the new gears fine, or is it best to go to the dana 44?
Basically I'm looking for any info you can give me and definitely some ballpark $$ amounts if possible.
You can't really change the gear ratios in a 700R4 transmission. You didn't say if it was a standard or an automatic, but since you said it was slipping , I'll assume an auto. The gears you mention (3.73) ARE in the "backend", not in the trans. With all due respect, either you have worded your questions poorly or they are much too advanced for your knowledge. This is not a flame. Just a well meaning observation. I (we) ARE here to help if I can.
3.73 gears would be way too much on an auto 86 unless its highly modded, 3.54s would be better. A Dana 44 would be a good idea when you do upgrade the gears esp. if you go to the track often, they almost never break.
well if the tranny goes out, we pretty much know its an auto. the 700R4 is a stout tranny and can handle alot of torque, so dont upgrade to a better one unless youre serious about mods.
I don't have many mods now, but once I get out of grad school I plan on buying a daily driver and start modding the vette. Figured if I was going to spend the $$ now to have it rebuilt, it might be more beneficial to go ahead and have it upgraded for future plans. That's why I came here first...to find out the info I obviously didn't know....and still not sure about some of it :)
since i'm in the same boat as you, just go get it replaced if you can afford it, get a new one instead of a rebuild. And if you do have to get the rebuild, make sure you get a warranty on the work.
