Im replaceing valve stem selas on my 86 vette and local machine shop said to use umbrella type on exhaust and positive seal type on intake . I called them back and asked about the oem o-ring on the stem under the keepers and they said I culd put one back or leave it off what do you think, does this sound right. I have read forum but have not found this question .
Most of us that have replaced the seals use the FELPRO intake seal all the way around. The umbrella seal on the exhaust just doesn't last. I replaed the "O" rings (they came with the seals). Just be careful when you install the seals, there should be a clear plastic sleeve with the seals that slips over the end of the valve stem. This is used to protect the seal from being cut by the groove used for the "O" ring. Slip the sleeve over the stem, dip the seal in some clean engine oil and slide it over the sleeve and down the stem and push it down tightly. Use the sleeve to start the "O" ring, then pull of the sleeve and seat the "O" ring in its groove. Use the sleeve on the next valve stem.
You might check out the post from Joe C about his alternative method of adjusting the valves. This works well and takes the guess work out of the zero lash adjustment.
